EBMA began its work during COVID and realized the importance of providing affordable healthy food to our community. We donโ€™t just talk about the food desert; we are urgently addressing this need. In the heat of COVID-19, we partnered with community-based organizations (CBOs) like Phoenix Community Garden, Free Fridge Community, Collective Fare, Camp Friendship Food Pantry, Corbin Hill Food Project, and 9 Million Reasonsโ€“โ€“along with numerous food distribution initiatives such as with elected officials Senator Zellnor Myrie and Council Person Darma Diazโ€“โ€“to provide food for approximately 80,000 Brooklyn residents. As an example, for 16 consecutive weeks we packed and delivered over 1,000 food boxes per day on behalf of the Corbin Hill Food Project through funding from the Get Food NYC Program with Brooklyn Packers. In just two short years, EBMA has used community organizing and advocacy as key tools for building and funding community-powered food networks.
